It is extremely possible that the HD I have been using for back up (of my G5) may be on the way out.  I went to a PC Depot shop yesterday to look at new HDs, and got some ideas... but I wanted to check with you before I used any money.

I saw internal (3.5 inch) hard drives that had 1.5 and 2 terabites and more capacity.  Wasn't there something that said that the one terabite HDs were no good? Have they improved?

Are any brands to be trusted more than others?

What I saw was something like 8000 yen for a 1.5 and maybe a 2 terabite internal HD.

Any comments at all would be appreciated.

No nothing wrong with 1T drives. Buy whatever you like, everyone hates different brands - I've had most trouble with WD but that was 3 drives from the same batch that went bad  a few years ago. So as a different person you'll probably get a different answer as to which is the most trustworthy.

And while you're at it grab that scrollwheel 2 button mouse for 1000 yen or so.

I put a Seagate 1 TB ST31000528AS (7999 yen) on a machine yesterday and it seems fine so far—has a big 32 MB disk cache that makes it seem fast. 1.5 and 2 TB were about 11,000 and 15,000, respectively.
WD and Seagate are the same company now so that leaves Hitachi, Seagate/WD, and Samsung as the main players in 3.5 disks.

It was about 45 minutes to Shin Yokohama, PC Depot, from my house... but I remember a 1.5 terabit for 8000 yen.  Guess I'll have to charge back there.

I'd be VERY surprised at 8000 yen for 1.5 TB—special offer perhaps.
Remember that spindle speed (7200 rpm) and disk cache (32 MB) are the best arbiters of disk performance NOT disk size.
If it is 1.5 TB but only 5400 rpm and 16 MB disk cache, I'd go for 1 TB with the better specs.
What you saw may be these:

http://www1.pcdepot.co.jp/webshop/commerce/CSfEcDispListPage_002.jsp?dispNo=001029&curDepth=2

The Samsung 1.5 TB for 8900 is a 5400 rpm drive so no good
The WD 2 TB has a nice big 64 MB cache but the specs don't show the rotation speed.  I also note that it uses the Advanced Block format now starting to appear.  I know the Intel Macs with 10.6 SL can handle this format but I am not sure about PPC Macs with 10.5 Leopard—worth checking first.

I recently picked up a 1TB Hitachi disk for around 7,500 and a USB external
case for about 1800. I see the price has dropped a tad:

More here on advanced format

It seems Tiger, Leopard and Snow Leopard are all OK with it.

Thanks.  I really don't remember what the brand of the 1.5 terabite HD  was... but I sure remember the price!

It is one of my externals which is failing, so I plan to replace it with an SATA internal.  The bigger the better... and if you say the speed on the 1.5 is insufficient, so be it.  I'll ask when I buy it... after payday, according to the Finance Minister.
