Computers and hard disks
« on: April 22, 2019, 04:15:03 PM »
I think I may have been lucky so far because in all my years of using computers (My first PC in Japan was an NEC 9801RX) I have had only ONE hard disk fail on me. It may have been a Western Digital but my memory is hazy!

In a perverse sort of way I'm waiting for my Thinkpad's disk to start showing signs of wear so I can replace it with an SSD with a clear conscience (ie: no complaints from the boss)   ;D But SMART tells me it's healthy!  :(

Now, this is tempting! 500Gb SSD for under 8000 yen! It's bigger than the hard drive in my machine!

It's either that, a new tablet/small notebook/Chromebook, or something silly, like this:

Since my Thinkpad is probably older than the mid 2010 Mac Mini I bit the bullet and ordered the Crucial 500Gb SSD. It should arrive tomorrow! When I have the energy (Been very under the weather lately) I'll swap out the hard drive, partition it and install Linux on it.

Installation was a breeze and re-installing the OS was uqick as was installing the 357 updates! The thing that IS taking ages is restoring all my data from the backup disk! I can't use the machine because all the hidden config files are locked until restore is finished.

The most surprising thing about swapping out the hard disk in the ThinkPad is there wasn't a single screw holding it in place. Whoever assembled this machine forgot to put a screw in the support bracket! I've got a bag of PC screws somewhere and when I have time and energy will hunt for them and screw in the SDD properly!

I don't know if this link works, but you can see where the screw is supposed to go in the bottom of the picture!

In the meantime, I ordered a cheap 2.5" HDD case for the old drive and will use it as backup for the boss.
