Air drop
« on: February 05, 2017, 11:28:19 AM »
I watched a friend used air drop yesterday to get a web page from my iPhone.  How exactly does it work?  I know how he sent it, but I don't know how he picked it up on HIS iPhone.

AS long as he has wifi turned on, he gets a message asking if he wants to download. He says yes, and over it comes. I think he has to be looking for the message, though. There's no ring, or anything like that.
It's great for passing photos to people. I took a photo of a class, and then I can distribute the photo to the class, or at least the 80% of them who have iPhones. Just took a few seconds.
Also great for uploading files to your own desk top from your phone. (In fact, if you want to know what the other side has to do, try it)

You need wifi and Bluetooth turned on.

I have yet to really look into it though. I don't know if you actually need to be in the same wifi network, or if just having it turned on is enough.

I have found it hit and miss—when it works, it is very good. When it doesn't there is no explaining why.

No, you don't have to be on any network.
Bluetooth is used to locate other airdroppers and wifi used to transmit (more or less).

Seems like airdrop is a modern version of "bump."

Well, I liked "bump," and was sorry it went under.

Probably just a terminology thing but I'd say you ARE on peer-to-peer networks.

You need wifi and Bluetooth turned on.

Works great for me with other people, but was unable to do it between my own iOS devices. I assumed you needed a different apple ID for each device.  Great to hear it can work between device and computer.

Is this the sameness hing when sending a big file via mac mail and it offers to let the recipient download from the cloud? I thought it mentioned airdrop?
