Title: Better hold off on buying Huawei

Apparently Google is putting large parts of Android off limits to Huawei. Open source Android will still be available to them, but other important protocols will be forbidden to them,
in what is seen by some as a major blow to Huawei.

Revenge is a dish best eaten cold!  8)

Remember Google pulled out of China after some s$!t from the Chinese government.

If Chinese made Huawei products are banned in 'murika then so should Chinese made Apple products, Lenovo products (including Motorola) and other Chinese tech. Why single out one manufacturer? I see, Huawei refused to offer Chump any kickbacks?

I think this whole kerfufle started over G5. In the process the wizards in Washington forgot that their cellphones are all put together by 14 year old Chinese Misses in Shenzheng.

Without Google Services any Huawei device (outside China) is a high-tech brick! There are times when I really need a screen bigger than my 5.9" Moto and there are no tablets out there made recently that are worth looking at. There are plenty of cheap no name Chinese tablets with dodgy spec and old versions of Android but nothing up-to-date. This needs to be resolved quickly, 'murika is hurting people all over the world and is just shooting itself in the foot!

Good news for US tech companies and investors!

The new blacklisting will stop Huawei from buying key components from US companies such as processors from Qualcomm and Intel, which both saw share-value drops immediately following the announcement from the Trump administration, according to the Financial Times.

Oh, and it's easy enough to sideload Google Play and services on a Huawei (or any) device:

Next up?  Chinese government plays hardball and bans iPhone sales in China?

It’s important to note that the US government has as of yet been unable to provide any evidence that Huawei devices contain backdoors or are somehow used to spy on people. That being said, it wouldn’t be hard to imagine such a scenario – all countries spy on all other countries, and China is in a unique position, as the manufacturing centre of the world, to do so.

I do wish to point out, though, that devices from other companies – Apple, Google, Dell, and virtually everyone else – are manufactured in the same factories by the same people led by the same managers owned by the same Chinese government as Huawei devices. Singling out Huawei, while trusting your Pixel 3 or iPhone X which rolls off the same assembly line, seems naive, at best.

It all gets ugly fast due to PCB component interdependence.

Everyone and his dog is getting hurt, not just Huawei. Talk about shooting yourself in the foot! (again!)

It provides real incentive to break free of dependence on US suppliers, including software.

I think I'll wander up to BIC Camera and look at some Huawei devices  :D I'm sure this is all a storm in a teacup and will blow over soon. Piggy-bank at the ready!

The rain has eased off a bit and I can't sit around the house all day waiting for it to stop. I'm going %$^&^%* stir crazy! Shower and out for a beer!

Yes, we're all too dependent on US companies and their government's whims. But there's no real alternative to Google. All my photos are stored there. Amazon? Their devices are real crap. 1.5Gb RAM and 32Gb storage? No thanks! I need to sync all my photos across my Android devices and Google make it easy.

Was talking with a Huawei staffer in BIC, she assured me that all current devices would be supported with security updates and Google services. Even the not yet on sale here P30 series.

Bwahahahahaha—do you really think a Huawei store worker knows s$!t from sugar when it comes to boardroom decisions.
Same with Apple Store workers.
They'll all bareface lie to customers if it facilitates a sale.

Of course not, she was just parroting what Huawei official accounts were saying, that current devices were OK, and they probably are. I'm still scouring for a 1000 quid Chromebook for under 30,000 yen, right . Micro SD cards are also very overpriced in BIC compared to Amazon.

At least I'm having a couple of cheap crap pints of Yebisu.

Chiang Mai had lots of - as they looked - very good condition laptops for 30000 yen or so. Not sure if any of the ones I saw were Chromebooks tho.

Does anyone believe that me, who is widely known to hate and distrust everyone and everything, would actually believe what a salesperson would say? I almost peed myself laughing. Humans! WTF!

Well, they're not sitting still. They've just released a new handset under their cheaper Honor brand:

Their own Android based OS is on its way too:

Don't remember where I read this, but the Chinese government may restrict exports of rare metals to the US....

The new P30 series is also now on sale in Japan.
